The 2016 Franklin County budget is on-track to stay below the 2% tax cap this year. Initial numbers presented to the legislature shows the total budget is down about 13% from this year. The biggest savings came from closing the county’s nursing home—that was nearly $6 million dollars alone. County treasurer Bryon Varin says they’re still negotiation union raises, so those numbers aren’t included and they’ll still have to close out the final expenses from the nursing home, but the county remains about $750-thousand under the tax cap. The tentative budget has to be filed with the clerk by Oct. 1.
